Why Is My Dryer Taking Two or Three Cycles to Dry Clothes?

This is one of those problems that can sneak up on a homeowner.

The dryer still turns on. The drum still spins. You can hear it running from the other room. Nothing about it feels completely broken.
But the first cycle ends and the towels are still damp.
So you start it again.
A week or two later, two cycles starts to feel normal. Then a load of jeans needs part of a third cycle and you realize something is not right.
When I hear, “The dryer is heating, it just takes forever,” the first thing I want to know is what the clothes feel like when that first cycle ends.
Are they warm and damp?
Are they cool and damp?
Are a few things dry while the heavier clothes are still wet?
That answer tells me a lot.
A dryer needs heat, airflow, and enough room for the clothes to tumble. If one of those is missing, drying time goes up. Sometimes the dryer itself is the problem. Sometimes the dryer is doing exactly what it should, but the air cannot get out of the house.
That distinction matters.
If The Clothes Are Hot And Damp, I Start Thinking About Airflow
This is probably the most common version of the problem.
The homeowner opens the dryer and a wave of heat comes out. The clothes are hot. The inside of the drum is hot. But the towels are still wet enough that nobody wants to fold them.
When I hear that, I start thinking about where all that moisture is supposed to go.
A dryer does not just heat clothes until the water disappears. It heats the load, turns that moisture into water vapor, then moves the warm damp air through the lint screen, through the dryer, into the vent, and finally outside.
If that air cannot leave, the moisture stays in the system.
The dryer keeps running and running, but it is working with damp air.
That is why a dryer can feel very hot and still do a poor job drying.
I Always Look At The Lint Screen
This seems almost too obvious, but I still check it.
Most homeowners clean the lint screen regularly. Some clean it every load. Others clean it when the layer of lint gets thick enough to peel off in one piece.
The screen needs to stay open enough for air to pass through it.
There is another problem that is harder to see.
Dryer sheets and fabric products can leave a film on the lint screen. The screen may look clean, but the small openings can be partially covered.
One simple way to notice it is when water tends to sit on the screen instead of passing through easily.
If the manufacturer allows it, the screen can usually be washed with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush, then dried completely before it goes back into the machine.
Whirlpool recommends cleaning the lint screen before every load and notes that residue buildup on the screen can contribute to longer drying times.
I like starting here because it is simple and it does not require taking the dryer apart.
But if the lint screen is clean and a normal load still needs two cycles, I keep looking.
Then I Look Behind The Dryer
This is where I find a lot of problems.
The dryer vent hose needs room.
A dryer gets pushed back after the floor is cleaned. Someone moves it to reach an outlet. A new washer is installed beside it and everything gets squeezed a little tighter.
Now the vent hose that used to have a smooth path has a bend in it.
Sometimes it is only a small kink. Sometimes the hose is almost flattened between the dryer and the wall.
The dryer still runs.
It still heats.
But the air cannot move through the vent fast enough.
If you are going to look behind the dryer yourself, turn the machine off first. Do not pull or disconnect a gas line. You are only looking for something obvious, such as a vent that is crushed, disconnected, or sharply bent.
I have walked into laundry rooms where the entire repair conversation changed after we pulled the dryer forward a few inches and saw the vent nearly closed behind it.
No control board. No heating element. No major internal failure.
The dryer just could not breathe.
The Vent Inside The Wall Matters Just As Much
This is the part people cannot see.
Once the air leaves the dryer, it still has to travel through the home and reach the outside vent hood.
Depending on where the laundry room sits, that path may be short and direct or it may travel a much longer distance with several turns.
Lint can collect along that path.
The longer and more restricted the vent becomes, the harder it is for the dryer to move damp air outside.
A homeowner may clean the lint screen every single load and still have poor airflow because the restriction is farther down the line.
One clue is the outside vent.
When the dryer is running, the exterior flap should open and you should feel a noticeable amount of air coming out. If the flap barely moves or the airflow feels weak, something may be restricting the system.
Leaves, lint, debris, and even nesting material can collect around an exterior opening.
The United States Fire Administration recommends cleaning the lint filter every time the dryer is used and cleaning dryer vent ductwork every year. It also reports that failure to clean was the leading factor contributing to ignition in home clothes dryer fires in its 2018 through 2020 data.
So this is not only about getting the towels dry faster.
Airflow is something worth taking seriously.
Sometimes The Load Is Simply Too Big
I know this answer is not very exciting, but it happens.
A washer can hold a large load and that does not always mean the dryer should receive the entire load at once.
Clothes need room to lift and tumble. That movement lets hot air pass between the fabrics.
Pack the drum too tightly and the clothes tend to roll around together in one heavy bundle.
Towels are especially good at doing this.
So are sheets.
A fitted sheet can wrap itself around smaller items and create what looks like one giant fabric ball turning around inside the dryer. The outside dries. Everything trapped in the middle stays damp.
If normal loads dry fine but one huge load takes forever, the machine may not have a repair problem at all.
Try a smaller load and see what changes.
I also ask whether the problem happens with every cycle or only with towels, blankets, or bedding. That is useful information before anybody starts replacing parts.
I Also Want To Know How Wet The Clothes Were When They Went In
This gets overlooked because the complaint is about the dryer.
Sometimes the dryer is the second appliance in the problem.
If the washer is not spinning properly, the clothes can come out holding far more
water than they should. The dryer then gets blamed because it takes an hour and
a half to remove water that the washer should have removed during the spin
cycle.
Pick up one of the clothes before putting it into the dryer.
It should be damp, not heavy with water.
If you can squeeze water from a towel after the washer finishes, I would look at
the washer before assuming the dryer has failed.
Factory Appliance Service has already covered what can cause a washer to stop
spinning or draining. If the laundry is coming out unusually wet, that may be the
better place to start.
This is one of the reasons I ask homeowners about the whole laundry process
instead of only the dryer.
The two machines affect each other more than people realize.
The Moisture Sensor Can Be Part Of The Story
Most newer dryers have automatic cycles that use moisture sensors to decide
when the load is dry.
Those sensors are usually metal strips inside the drum.
As wet clothes touch them, the dryer gets information about the moisture level
and adjusts the cycle.
Residue from dryer sheets and fabric products can coat those strips over time.
When that happens, the sensor may not read the load correctly.
Depending on the machine and the problem, the dryer may stop too soon, run
longer than expected, or leave part of the load damp.
If your dryer works better on a timed cycle than it does on an automatic cycle, I
pay attention to that.
It does not prove the sensor is bad, but it gives us another clue.
The owner’s manual should explain where the moisture sensors are and whether
the manufacturer recommends cleaning them.
Use whatever cleaning method the manufacturer specifies. There is no reason to
scrub them with a harsh product and create another issue.
A Dryer Can Heat Without Heating Properly
This is where things become a little less obvious.
A homeowner reaches into the drum, feels heat, and assumes the heating
system must be fine.
Not always.
An electric dryer can have a heating problem and still produce some heat. A gas
dryer can have ignition or burner problems that show up during the cycle instead
of right at the beginning.
There are also thermostats, sensors, controls, and airflow related protections that
affect how long the heat stays on.
The dryer may start hot and then stop heating properly.
It may heat inconsistently.
It may cycle the heat off too quickly because the machine is getting too hot from
restricted airflow.
This is why feeling warm air in the first five minutes does not tell me everything I
need to know.
I want to know what the dryer does through the whole cycle.

When the dryer gets hot but takes two or three cycles, airflow moves higher on
my list.
The Dryer Should Not Make The Laundry Room Feel Like A Sauna
This is another clue homeowners mention after I ask about it.
“The laundry room has been getting really hot.”
A dryer creates heat, so some warmth in the room is normal.
A room that becomes unusually hot or humid every time the dryer runs is
different.
That can happen when the vent is restricted or disconnected and hot damp air is
not making it outside the way it should.
Sometimes there is lint collecting behind the dryer. Sometimes the vent
connection has slipped loose. Sometimes the problem is farther down the
exhaust path.
If you notice the room getting hotter than it used to, do not ignore it.
The change is more important than the exact temperature.
You know your laundry room. If it suddenly feels different, there is probably a
reason.
Houston Laundry Can Be Hard On A Dryer
Around Houston, laundry can pile up fast.
During the hotter months there are pool towels, sports clothes, work clothes,
school uniforms, and the regular household laundry on top of everything else.
A dryer that used to run four or five loads a week may suddenly be running much
more often.
That does not automatically damage the machine, but it makes small airflow
problems easier to notice.
A vent that is partly restricted may seem fine with a light load of shirts. Put in a full
load of thick towels and the dryer struggles.
That is often how homeowners first notice the problem.
“The regular clothes dry. The towels take forever.”
That sentence tells me quite a bit.
What I Would Check Before Calling For Service
I would start with the things you can see without opening the dryer.
Clean the lint screen.
Look behind the machine for a crushed vent.
Check the outside vent hood while the dryer is running and see whether it opens
normally.
Try a smaller load.
Notice whether the clothes are extremely wet when they come out of the washer.
Pay attention to whether the dryer is actually heating through the entire cycle.
If your model has a check vent warning or airflow code, do not keep clearing it
and pretending it is not there.
Those are useful checks.
I would stop before removing panels, testing live electrical components, taking
apart a gas system, or reaching deep into the dryer cabinet.
At that point, the machine needs to be tested properly.
Two Cycles Should Not Become Your New Normal
This is probably the biggest thing I want homeowners to take from this.
A dryer that suddenly takes twice as long is telling you something changed.
Maybe the lint screen is coated.
Maybe the vent is restricted.
Maybe the washer is leaving too much water in the clothes.
Maybe a sensor is dirty.
Maybe the heating system is not performing the way it should.
Whatever the cause, paying for two or three cycles and spending half the evening
waiting for one load of towels is not something you should simply accept.
It is also worth remembering the safety side of restricted airflow. The United
States Fire Administration specifically identifies cleaning as an important part of
dryer fire prevention.
So when dry times start stretching out, I would rather figure out why than keep
turning the timer back on.
When It Is Time To Have The Dryer Checked
Call for service when normal sized loads consistently need more than one cycle,
the dryer becomes unusually hot, the outside airflow is weak, or you hear new
noises while the machine runs.
Service is also a good idea if the dryer starts shutting off before the load is dry,
shows repeated airflow warnings, or heats only part of the time.
If you notice a burning smell, stop using the dryer until the cause is identified.
The goal is to figure out whether the problem is airflow, heating, sensing, the vent
system, or something coming from the washer.
