What I Usually Find When a Dishwasher Won’t Drain

There is a particular look homeowners give me when they open the dishwasher and pull out the bottom rack.

Dishwasher Won’t Drain

They do not really need to explain anything. The water sitting in the bottom says enough.


Usually, they point at it and say, “That was still there this morning.”


Sometimes the water is cloudy. Sometimes there are bits of food floating near the

filter. Sometimes it smells bad enough that nobody wants to stand near the open

door for very long.


The natural reaction is to press the drain button again. Then maybe reset the

machine. Then run another cycle and hope it sorts itself out.


That is normally where I ask them to stop.


A dishwasher that will not drain is usually trying to tell us something. Running it

again rarely fixes the cause. Most of the time, it only adds more water to a

machine that is already having trouble getting rid of it.


The good news is that standing water does not automatically mean you need a

new dishwasher. I have seen this problem caused by something as ordinary as a

dirty filter or a bottle of cleaner pressing against the drain hose under the sink.


I have also seen failed pumps, damaged wiring, and control problems.


The water may look the same in every case. The repair is not.


The Conversation Usually Starts With What Changed


Before checking parts, I like to know what happened around the time the problem

started.


Was the garbage disposal replaced last week?


Did the sink back up?


Did someone reorganize the cabinet under the sink?


Was the dishwasher making a strange noise before it stopped draining?


Did the power flicker during one of Houston’s afternoon storms?


Those details are useful because appliances do not always fail in isolation.


A dishwasher may stop draining because its pump failed. It may also stop

because the water cannot pass through the plumbing connection under the sink.


If the trouble started immediately after a new garbage disposal was installed,

that matters. If the machine has been grinding during the drain cycle for a month,

that matters too.


Sometimes the homeowner pauses and says, “Actually, now that you mention it,

the disposal was replaced a few days ago.”


That one detail can change where the whole inspection begins.


Not Every Drop of Water Is a Problem


Some dishwashers keep a small amount of water below the filter. It helps protect

seals and other components from drying out.


That is usually clean water sitting down in the lowest part of the machine. You

may not even notice it unless you remove the filter and look closely.


The water I am concerned about is different.


It may cover the bottom of the tub. It may have food floating in it. It may smell

sour. The dishes may still feel greasy because the machine finished the cycle

using dirty water.


Once the water reaches that point, something interrupted the normal drain

process.


The question is where.


The Filter Is Often Dirtier Than Anyone Expects


Most homeowners know their dryer has a lint filter. Fewer people think about the

filter inside the dishwasher.


It sits below the lower rack, so it is easy to forget about until there is a problem.


Then we remove it.


The reaction is often the same.


“I had no idea that was in there.”


The filter catches the things that come off dishes during a wash cycle. Grease,

rice, seeds, pieces of labels, bits of plastic, and small food particles can all collect

there.


Houston families often use their dishwashers heavily. Dinner plates go in after a

long workday. Then there are cooking utensils, lunch containers, coffee cups, and

everything left after friends or relatives visit.


That adds up.


A filter does not need to look completely blocked to affect drainage. A thick

coating of grease can slow the flow of water. Small objects can also move

beyond the filter and reach the pump area.


One of the reasons I tell people to be careful is broken glass.


A chipped drinking glass may lose a small piece during the cycle. That piece can

disappear into cloudy water near the bottom of the machine.


Reaching around with a bare hand is not worth the risk.


When the filter is removable, it can usually be cleaned with warm water and a

soft brush. The owner’s manual should explain how it unlocks. Some twist. Others

lift or use a small locking tab.


Do not force it. A cracked filter creates a new problem that was not there before.


A Dishwasher Problem Can Actually Be a Sink Problem


After looking inside the machine, I usually open the cabinet under the sink.


The dishwasher drain hose runs from the machine to the garbage disposal or sink

drain. Used water has to move through that hose before it can leave the kitchen.


If the hose is crushed, bent, or blocked, the dishwasher may be working harder

than it should without moving much water.


This happens more easily than people think.


Someone puts a large bottle of cleaner under the sink. A box of trash bags gets

pushed toward the back. A small trash bin shifts against the hose.


Nothing looks unusual from the front of the cabinet. Behind everything, the hose is

almost flat.


There is also the garbage disposal connection.


A new disposal often comes with a plug inside the opening used by the

dishwasher hose. That plug must be removed during installation.


When it is left in place, the dishwasher cannot drain into the disposal.


The sink may still drain normally. The disposal may run without any trouble. From

the homeowner’s point of view, everything under the sink appears to be working.


Meanwhile, the dishwasher water has reached a dead end.


That is why I never assume the dishwasher itself needs a major part before

checking its path to the drain.

Sometimes the Water Leaves and Comes Back Later


This one can be confusing.


A homeowner runs the dishwasher and hears the water drain. Everything sounds

normal. A few hours later, water is sitting in the bottom again.


In that situation, the drain pump may have done its job.


The water may be returning from the sink or garbage disposal.


The drain hose usually needs to rise high under the counter or connect through

an air gap, depending on the plumbing setup. That arrangement helps prevent

dirty water from flowing backward into the dishwasher.


If the hose falls out of position, sits too low, or was installed incorrectly, water can

travel the wrong way.


That means the important question is not only whether there is water in the

dishwasher.


Did the water stay there after the wash, or did it return later?


The answer helps separate a pumping problem from an installation or plumbing

problem.


The Sound of the Pump Tells Us Something


When the dishwasher reaches the drain portion of the cycle, I listen.


A working drain pump has a steady sound. It is not silent, but it should not sound

rough or strained.


A humming sound may mean the pump is trying to run but cannot move.

Something may be stuck near the impeller.


A grinding or rattling sound can point to debris inside the pump area or damage

to the pump itself.


Complete silence can mean the pump has failed. It can also mean the pump is

not receiving power.


That distinction matters.


Replacing the pump because it seems like the obvious answer is still a guess. The

pump could be perfectly good while a wire, switch, sensor, or control component

is preventing it from running.


This is where testing saves money.


A technician can check whether the pump is receiving the correct voltage,

whether the impeller moves, and whether the drain path is clear.


That is much better than ordering a part, waiting for it, installing it, and

discovering the water is still there.


What Went Into the Dishwasher Matters Too


At some point, I usually ask whether anyone used regular dish soap.


That question often gets a laugh.


Regular liquid soap creates far more suds than an automatic dishwasher can

handle. The machine fills with foam, the cycle does not behave normally, and

water may end up around the door or across the floor.


Sometimes a child was helping. Sometimes someone grabbed the wrong bottle.

Sometimes the regular soap looked close enough to dishwasher gel that nobody

noticed.


Too much dishwasher detergent can also create residue and buildup.


Then there are the things that simply should not go into the machine.


Fruit stickers are a common one. They slide off during the wash and find their way

toward the filter.


Small bones, pits, paper, thick grease, and broken pieces of plastic can cause

trouble too.


You do not need to wash every dish before loading it. Scraping away larger

pieces is usually enough.


The goal is not to make the dishes spotless before the machine starts. It is to keep

objects that cannot dissolve away from the pump and drain system.


Houston’s water can add another layer to the problem. Mineral deposits may

collect around filters, spray arms, and internal components. When cloudy glasses

or white residue appear alongside drainage trouble, it is worth looking at the

bigger picture.

What I Am Comfortable Telling a Homeowner to Check


There are a few things you can look at without pulling the machine apart.


Cancel the current cycle and select the drain setting when your model provides

one. An interrupted cycle may simply have stopped before the final drain.


Check the kitchen sink and run the garbage disposal. If the sink is backed up, the

dishwasher may not have anywhere to send its water.


Look under the sink for a crushed or sharply bent drain hose.


Remove and clean the dishwasher filter when the manufacturer’s instructions

allow it.


Listen when the machine tries to drain. A hum, grinding sound, or complete

silence is useful information.


Write down any error code. Do not keep clearing it before anyone has a chance to

see it.


These checks may solve a simple problem or help a technician narrow down the

cause.


Once the job requires removing panels, disconnecting hoses, or testing electrical

parts, it is better to stop.


A dishwasher places hot water and electricity within a very small space. There are

also sharp metal edges around the lower panels.


A repair that begins as standing water can become a cut hand, a damaged hose,

or a flooded kitchen very quickly.


Running Another Cycle Usually Makes Things Worse


This is the part I wish more homeowners heard early.


When a dishwasher does not drain, do not keep filling it with more water.


It is tempting to think the next cycle might flush the blockage away. In practice,

the machine usually adds more dirty water and places more strain on the same

pump or drain path that is already struggling.


The smell gets worse.


The filter becomes dirtier.


Water may begin leaking around the door or underneath the appliance.


At that point, the repair is no longer only about drainage. Cabinets, flooring, and

the ceiling below the kitchen may also be involved.


When water is actively leaking, turn off the dishwasher and its water supply when

you can do so safely.

When It Is Time to Bring in a Technician


A clean filter does not rule out a drain problem.


Professional service is a good idea when the dishwasher hums without draining,

makes a grinding sound, repeatedly displays the same error, or fills with water

again after appearing to drain.


Call when the breaker trips or when you smell something hot or electrical.


It is also time to call when the drain hose needs to be disconnected or when the

appliance must be pulled out of the cabinet.


The goal of the service visit should be to find out whether the cause is the filter,

hose, disposal connection, check valve, pump, wiring, control, or plumbing

arrangement.

The Advice I Would Leave With You


Clean the filter before the dishwasher forces you to think about it.


Leave enough room under the sink so bottles and supplies do not crush the drain

hose.


Scrape away anything that will not break down during the wash.


Use the correct detergent and the amount recommended for your machine.


Listen when the dishwasher sounds different.


You may not know exactly what changed, but you know the usual rhythm of the

appliance in your own kitchen. When the drain becomes louder, rougher, or

strangely quiet, pay attention.


Small changes often show up before the machine stops working completely.


When water is already sitting in the bottom, start with the simple checks and

avoid running another full cycle.


Sometimes the filter needs attention. Sometimes the drain path is blocked.

Sometimes the pump or control system has failed.


The water itself cannot tell you which one it is.


The way it got there usually can.
